Norm Pethrick, a 36-year-old man in Australia’s northern city Darwin, was praised on Thursday for jumping onto a crocodile’s(鳄鱼) back to save his wife Wendy at Litchfield National Park, a popular tourist spot southwest of Darwin, a local newspaper reported.

Ms Pethrick was standing on a river bank Wednesday afternoon when the saltwater crocodile lunged (扑), locking its jaws on both her legs as it tried to drag her underwater.

Norm Pethrick, who with his wife had been collecting water, immediately went to help her. He jumped onto the back, poked (戳) the eyes of the crocodile and finally got his wife free.

Ms Pethrick was later taken to Royal Darwin Hospital for a medical treatment. The doctors said she was suffering eight puncture(扎伤) wounds in her right leg, a puncture wound in her left leg and a serious cut to one of her fingers.

“This could have been a fatal and tragic situation,” said the general manager of Royal Darwin Hospital (RDH), Dr Len Notaras, according to a local report. He said Ms Pethrick was saved by her husband’s “quick and diligent actions”.

One fine afternoon, while walking, I remembered that I needed a pair of socks. I turned into a sock shop that caught my eye, and a boy clerk who was about 17 came forward. “What can I do for you, sir?\" There was a note of passion in his voice. “Did you know that you have come into the finest place in the world to buy socks? Come with me,” said the boy. I followed him to the back of the shop, and he began to take down from the shelves box after box of socks.

“I am going to buy only one pair!” “I know that,” said he, “but I want you to see how beautiful these are. Aren’t they wonderful?” I became far more interested in him than in the socks. I looked at him in surprise. “My friend,” said I, “if you can keep this up, if this is not just the enthusiasm that comes from having a new job, if you can keep up this excitement day after day, in ten years you will be a good businessman.”

My surprise at his pride and joy in his salesmanship will be easily understood by all who read this article. In many shops the customer has to wait for someone to serve him. And when finally some shop assistant notices you, you are made to feel as if you were interrupting him. He displays no interest either in you or in the goods he is paid to sell. It's possible that every shop assistant who is now so bored began his career with hope and enthusiasm.

I have observed this happen in the lives of so many men. I have come to the conclusion that the surest road to failure is to do things mechanically(机械地).

D. the author thought the boy did things mechanically 64. In the author’s view, the boy clerk is_____ . A. tired and lazy C. hard-working and annoying

B. enthusiastic and amazing D. nervous and impatient

Foxes and farmers have never got on well. These small dog-like animals have long been accused of killing farm animals. They are officially classified as harmful and farmers try to keep their numbers down by shooting or poisoning them.

Farmers can also call on the services of their local hunt to control the fox population. Hunting consists of pursuing a fox across the countryside, with a group of specially trained dogs, followed by men and women riding horses. When the dogs eventually catch the fox they kill it or a hunter shoots it.

People who take part in hunting think of it as a sport; they wear a special uniform of red coats and white trousers, and follow strict codes of behavior. But owning a horse and hunt ing regularly is expensive, so most hunters are wealthy.

It is estimated that up to 100,000 people watch or take part in fox hunting. But over the last couple of decades the number of people opposed to fox hunting, because they think it is brutal (残酷的), has risen sharply. Nowadays it is rare for a hunt to pass off without some kind of confrontation (冲突) between hunters and hunt saboteurs (阻拦者). Sometimes these incidents lead to violence, but mostly saboteurs interfere with the hunt by misleading riders and disturbing the trail of the fox's smell, which the dogs follow.

Noisy confrontations between hunters and saboteurs have become so common that they are almost as much a part of hunting as the pursuit of foxes itself. But this year supporters of fox hunting face a much bigger threat to their sport. A Labor Party Member of the Parliament, Mike Foster, is trying to get Parliament to approve a new law which will make the hunting of wild animals with dogs illegal. If the law is passed, wild animals like foxes will be protected under the ban in Britain.

65. Rich people in Britain have been hunting foxes A. for recreation (娱乐) B. in the interests of the farmers C. to limit the fox population D. to show off their wealth 66. What is special about fox hunting in Britain?

A. It involves the use of a deadly poison. B. It is a costly event which rarely occurs.

C. The hunters have set rules to follow.

D. The hunters have to go through strict training.

67. A new law may be passed by the British Parliament to________. A. prohibit farmers from hunting foxes B. forbid hunting foxes with dogs

C. stop hunting wild animals in the countryside D. prevent large-scale fox hunting

68. It can be inferred from the passage that ________. A. killing foxes with poison are illegal

B. limiting the fox population is unnecessary

Londoners are great readers. They buy vast numbers of newspapers and magazines and of books --- especially paperbacks, which are still comparatively cheap in spite of ever-increasing rises in the costs of printing. They still continue to buy “proper” books, too, printed on good paper and bound(装订)between hard covers.

There are many streets in London containing shops which specialize in book-selling. Perhaps the best known of these is Charring Cross Road in the very heart of London. Here bookshops of all sorts and sizes are to be found, from the celebrated one which boasts of being “the biggest bookshop in the world” to the tiny, dusty little places which seem to have been left over from Dickens’ time. Some of these shops stock, or will obtain, any kind of book, but many of them specialize in second-hand books, in art books, in foreign books, in books on philosophy, politics or any other of the countless subjects about which books may be written. One shop in this area specializes only in books about ballet!

Although it may be the most convenient place for Londoners to buy books, Charring Cross Road is not the cheapest. For the really cheap second-hand books, the collector must venture off the beaten track, to Farringdon Road, for example, in the East Central district of London. Here there is nothing so impressive as bookshops. The booksellers come along each morning and pour out their sacks of books onto small hand carts. And the collectors, some professionals and some amateurs, have been waiting for them. In places like this they can still, occasionally, pick up for a few pence an old one that may be worth many pounds.

72. “Londoners are great readers” means that __________. A. Londoners are great because they read a lot. B. There are a great number of readers in London C. Londoners are readers who read only great books D. Londoners read a lot

73. According to this passage, Charring Cross Road __________. A. is in the suburbs of London B. is famous for its bookshops

C. contains various kinds of shops D. is the busiest street in London

74. In this passage, what does the underlined part “venture off the beaten track” mean? __________. A. buy books in a most busy street B. move away from a busy street C. waste time looking for books D. take a risk of losing one’s life 75. On Farringdon Road, _________.

A. you can find fine bookshops for the latest books B. there are only small bookshops for the second-hand books C. you can see book sellers selling books on hand-carts

D. the same books as the ones in the bookshops of Charring Cross Road are sold

During the summer holidays this year, I thought I should do something meaningful instead of staying at home, so I got a job at a KFC fast food restaurant and worked there as a cleaner. I worked seven hours a day for four weeks.

The job was hard and boring and seemed endless, which made me so tired that I nearly gave it up half way. After all, I stuck to it with determination. Every day I started off for work early in the morning and got home late in the evening. Finally I finished the job before the new term began.

Although I met with a lot of difficulty in the work, it helped me understand better what labor means. I think it is really a successful experience.
