A Last Friday, I was coming home late after spending time with friends and thought I’d go down to the $99 cent pizza place. On the way, I saw a man sitting on the stairs alone there. I’d seen him before every day I run late to work, but this time I had no place to rush off to.
There was something about him, a quiet manner, different from many of other homeless people I had seen in New York City. I walked past him, went to the pizza place, and those 10 seconds waiting in line was enough to practice stepping outside of my usual, familiar flow. So with a few slices in hand, I went back to join him. I asked him if he was hungry. He said yes, but not for pizza because it made him uncomfortable. He’d rather have a few bucks for chicken and rice since it was easier on his stomach. It’s funny, in that moment; he became more real to me.
This man I had seen almost every day was someone with specific conditions, needs, and experiences. We exchanged names and ended up talking for a little over an hour that night as Kevin told me stories from his life, how he had done things when “he was younger and didn’t know any better” and how he tried to make amends (补偿) but too much time had passed. He shared his views on the value for young adults to learn the history of other people.
He talked about his one wish being in his 60’s before he leaves this earth, which is to share his story with the teenagers and young adults so they could avoid the mistakes he went through. Throughout the conversation, he eventually got his chicken and rice and gifted me a rose he had been carrying. Shortly afterwards, I made my way home, thinking to myself, “I met an amazing homeless person”.

B My 3-year-old son and I lived a very hard life because I had been out of work since two years ago. Being poor is a terrible feeling when your 3-year-old finishes his meal and says: “Can I have some more bread and jam (果酱) please, Mummy?” And you break down in tears, because you don’t know how to tell him that there is no more food. With £6, I went to the supermarket, picked up some food and started to cook at home. It was time for me to make a change and get back on my feet. I began to write a series of articles for the website named Hunger Hurt in July 2011.
A few months later, local food bank gave me some help-- with some free vegetables every month, which made my life a little easier. I began to write recipes(食谱), posting them on my blog. To my surprise, families, students and those poor people told me how much it helped to see healthy recipes made from affordable supermarket vegetables.
My Life took unexpected turns. I was invited to give a speech on food, interviewed for an Oxfam report on food banks and asked to write a cookery book.
When I got the money from the book, for the first night in almost two years, I went to bed without worrying. Now, I have a well-paid job and a beautiful home, and I’ll never forget the days when I worked hard for a good life.

D In 2008,I was going through a tough time. My friend suggested that I read the book,The Secret. I went to buy it that very evening. That book later changed my life and situation.
The Secret is just not a book for me;it is my guide that instructs me each time I am in a situation of doubt. I recall an incident;a colleague discovered The Secret on my table. She wanted to borrow it. I said no,which was very unlike me,and she was amazed by my response. I mentioned that the book was special as it was a life changer, and that I never gave my copy to anyone.
After some days, she came to my office with a smile. She had got The Secret for herself. She thought of my saying “no”,which made her curious to find out how the book could be a life changer. After reading it,she could feel the difference at her home and work in terms of managing the worklife balance and maintaining relationships with peace. She mentioned that she used to react to situations differently, resulting in more stress from both ends. She realized that stress attracts more stress, and that if she stays calm, the universe will reflect peace back to her. I agree with her,our thoughts shape our lives and that's how we nourish our souls. When I look back,I feel fulfilled that over those years of knowing The Secret,I've realized that problems do come in life, and though I might have hit the bottom at times,I've always surfaced with a belief that happiness comes from our own thoughts. And that is how The Secret has truly inspired me. It has given me the inner strength which has allowed me to sail through all pains and sorrows, and helps me to get over things.
