One morning during my second month of art school, our teacher gave us an unprepared test. I was always a hardworking student and I did well in all my subjects. So it seemed a piece of cake to me. I had finished the questions successfully and easily, until I read the last one: “What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school building every day?”
Surely this was some kind of joke. I had seen the cleaning woman several times. She was tall, gold-haired and about 50 years old, but how would I know her name? It was none of my business. I handed in my paper, leaving the last question empty.
Just before class ended, one student asked if the last question would count towards our quiz grade.
“Of course it will,” said the teacher. “In your life, you will meet many people. All people are important. And all jobs need to be respected. They work hard. They deserve your attention and care, even if all that you do is smile and say hello.”
I’ve never forgotten that lesson. Actually, that was the most meaningful lesson in my life. I also learned that the cleaning woman’s name was Ally Black.

Do you have some strange questions about science? Perhaps you’ve thought about “What would it be like on Earth without the moon?” A recent BBC article explores this question.
The moon formed 4.5 billion years ago. The moon and Earth worked together very well. They have a gravitational force (引力) on each other. The moon has been slowing down the rotation (转动) of Earth, resulting in a day on Earth becoming longer from 5 hours to 24.
Yet the moon is still on the move. It’s moving away from Earth at the speed of 3.78
centimeters every year. It’s now around 18 times further away from us than when it was formed
So how is this influencing Earth?
It doesn’t just mean that to the human eye, the silver moon has become smaller in the dark sky. The moon’s gravitation plays an important role for the sea’s tidal flow (潮汐流) on Earth. Without the moon, sea tides would still come out, but its tides would become weak.
The greatest effect(作用) would be in the long term. Experts say that the moon keeps Earth turning in a the same way. If we lost our moon, it would be possible that Earth would turn wildly, like Mars does. This may cause some terrible seasons. Winters would be much colder and summers much hotter. This could destroy life on Earth.
Luckily, we don’t need to worry about it right now. These effects on Earth will take place over many millions of years.
52. From Paragraph 2, we learn that _____.
A. there were about five hours in a day on Earth 4.5 billion years ago B. there were animals on the moon 4.5 billion years ago C. the moon helped speed up the rotation of Earth
D.the moon and Earth came into being at the same time 53. Paragraph 3 tells us that the moon _____.
A. is moving at a speed of 3.78 centimeters per year B. is gradually moving further away from Earth C. moves 18 times faster than when it first formed D. moves at about 70 centimeters a year
54. The distance between the moon and Earth can influence _____. ① the size of the moon ② the sea’s tidal flow ③ the way Earth turns ④ the way Mars moves ⑤ the seasons on Earth A. ①②③ B. ①②④ C. ②③④ D. ②③⑤ 55.Which is the best title for this passage? A. No moon, no Earth
