文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了阿拉斯加南部的卡特迈国家公园和自然保护区举行的“胖熊周”活动。

13. For some people, October is Octobear. On October 5, Katmai National Park and Preserve in southern Alaska kicked off Fat Bear Week, whenfans compare before and after photos of bears to vote for the one they think has gained the most weight before they bed down for the long freezingwinter. Bear 747, also known as “Bear Force One”, took the first-place spot with 68,105 votes. It weighed around 1,400 pounds.

Fat Bear Week started in 2014.At first it was just Fat Bear Tuesday. Mike Fitz, a former park keeper at Katmai, noticed that live webcamsshowing the bears generated a lot of online comments, so he let people vote for their favorite fat bear on the Internet. The one-day event attracted1,700 votes. In 2015, it was extended to a week. Last year, nearly 800,000 people got involved, turning it into a global campaign.

The contest serves two main purposes. First, some of America’s national parks are in remote and undeveloped areas, which are difficult or costlyto reach. Fat Bear Week brings Alaska’s wilderness to fans’ computer screens. “It’s not limited to the fortunate few who can go to the river anymore,”Fitz said.

Second, Fat Bear Week brings attention to the bears and the ecosystems they live in. The 2,200 bears of Katmai are strong for feeding on some ofthe healthiest salmon(三文鱼)in the world, said Sara Wolman, a former park keeper. Salmon in the Pacific Northwest are suffering from overfishing, dam construction and warming rivers due to climate change. Luckily, Brooks River, which Katmai’s bears like to fish in, has been free from thesethreats so far.

Fat Bear Week has spread like viruses. Fans and creators say it’s because it shows a conservation success story. For one week, people don’thave to focus on climate change or habitat loss. “Maybe things aren’t super great all the time in the world,” said Felicia Jimenez, who is a currentKatmai keeper. “But there are some really fat bears in Alaska.”

1. Why did Bear 747 become the winner of Fat Bear Week in southern Alaska?

A.It gained the most pounds.C.It presented the best photos.

2. What is the purpose of paragraph 2?

B.It was the heaviest.D.It was the most famous.B.To review the history of the event.D.To explain the role of live webcams.B.They face a population decline.D.They have a stable food source.B.Brown Bears; Winter Survival Is CrucialD.Katmai’s Bears: A Special Beauty Contest

A.To show the popularity of fat bears.C.To praise Mike Fitz for his work.

3. What can we learn about Katmai’s bears?

A.They bring tourists to the park.C.They remain difficult to be seen.

4. Which can be the best title for the text?

A.Fat Bear Week: Conservation Is JoyfulC.Bear 747: A Fat Yet Healthy Champion

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章介绍了中国女子足球运动员王霜的相关经历和成就。

14. Wang Shuang was just five when her parents divorced, dropped her at her uncle’s and left. Football, as it often is, became an escape. At seven, she was spotted by coach Xu Yilong, who found Wang quick in her playful behavior. As the only girl in the boys’ team, Wang’sperformances were impressive, earning her the nickname “Iron Girl.” And soon, she sensed the sport’s power. Football allowed her to “releaseherself” and realize “whatever happens, football never leaves you alone.”

However, life was never smooth sailing. The constant jibes (嘲讽) from some people, who always tried to push her down and destroy her hopes, affected her so deeply that she lost confidence. “They were saying I had no talent at all. Gradually, I felt really so.” Wang once wrote. But never didshe stop playing. When she was called up to the national team, aged 17, Wang thought, “Me? Are you sure?” When a world-famous club wanted tosign her, she was “excited that an excellent coach thought I was good.” It was only then that she felt confident in her abilities. “I felt recognized.Perhaps I had a bit of talent after all.”

Not any “bit of talent”; the genius is praised as China’s once-in-a-generation player.

China is a pioneer of women’s football in Asia and has won the continental championship eight times, including seven straight titles between 1986and 1999. That was their golden age. Gradually, though, the dynasty declined. It is hoped that Wang will inspire the women’s football of the countryto its former height.

Coaches are almost always hesitant to speak about individual players. But when coach Shui was asked about Wang before the match againstVietnam, she couldn’t stop mentioning her influence on the team. Unfailingly performing on the big stage, Wang did not let her team down. When theylacked a quality ball, she delivered two high assists that finally led her team into the last-four clash (四分之一决赛).

“Nobody knows how hard it was,” declared Wang after the match. “We overcame difficulties. We also showed our strong spiritual power. I amproud of my team.”

1. What can we infer about Wang from the second paragraph?

A.She earned a living on her own.C.She was laughed at by the boys.

2. How did Wang regain faith in her abilities?

B.She was released from the team.D.She found a sense of belonging.B.By obtaining inspiration.

D.By ignoring other people’s jibes.B.Contradictory.D.Demanding.

B.Wang Shuang: A Child Genius

D.Wang Shuang: A Golden Age Creator

A.By winning recognition.

C.By playing in the national team.

3. Which would best describe coach Shui’s attitude to Wang?

A.Conservative.C.Favourable.

4. What’s the best title for the text?

A.Wang Shuang: A Steel RoseC.WangShuang: A Football Pioneer

文章大意:本文是一篇议论文。人类一直对时间旅行很感兴趣,从理论上来说,时间旅行是可行的,但时间旅行未必是好事。作者认为我们最好还是活在当下。

15. If you could travel in time, where would you go? Perhaps you would watch an original performance of a Shakespeare’s play in ElizabethanEngland? What about hanging out with Laozi in the Spring and Autumn Period? Or maybe you’d voyage far ahead of the present day to see what thefuture holds.

The possibility of time travel is indeed appealing. Stories exploring the subject have been around for hundreds of years. Perhaps the best knownexample is the science fiction novel The Time Machine, which was written by H. G. Wells and published in 1895 for the first time. It was adapted intoat least two feature films of the same name, as well as two television versions, and a large number of comic book adaptations. It is generally creditedwith the popularization of the concept of time travel using a vehicle that allows an operator to travel purposefully and selectively. The term “timemachine”, coined by Wells, is now universally used to refer to a vehicle transporting people into the far future.

But could time travel actually be possible? Some scientists say yes, in theory. They propose using cracks in time and space called “wormholes”,which could be used as shortcuts to other periods. Einstein’s theory of relativity allows time travel in extreme circumstances. And British physicistStephen Hawking said you could travel into the future with a really fast spaceship—going at nearly the speed of light. Though building such aspaceship would of course be no simple task.

Even if you could travel into the past, there is something called the “grandfather paradox”. It asks what would happen if a time traveller were togo back in time and have his own grandfather killed for some reason, and therefore prevent himself from being born. If the time traveller wasn’t born, how would he travel back in time?

And would you really like to visit the future? In H. G. Wells’ book, the main character travels into distant time where he arrives at a beach and isattacked by giant crabs. He then voyages 30 million years into the future where the only living thing is a black object with tentacles (触角). If that’swhat’s in store, maybe we are better just living in the present day after all.1. The novel The Time Machine mentioned in Paragraph 2 aims to show .A.people’s interest in time travelB.the special features of the bookC.the long history of time travelD.the contribution of H. G. Wells

2. Einstein’s and Hawking’s theories .A.have similarities in many ways

B.push the invention of the first spaceshipC.have proved wrong by some time travellersD.suggest the possibility to invent the time machine

3. In Paragraph 4, “grandfather paradox” probably refers to the idea that .A.the traveller is prevented from meeting his grandfatherB.the traveller goes back in time to seek for his grandfatherC.the grandfather’s death makes the traveller’s birth impossibleD.The reunion of the traveller and his grandfather brings happiness

4. What is probably the author’s attitude towards time travel?

A.Unclear.C.Supportive.B.Skeptical.D.Unconcerned.

文章大意:本文是篇说明文。文章介绍了一个美国新开发的、名叫“Smarter Child”的电脑程序,讲述了它强大的功能和存在的问题。

16. How clever can a computer be? Maybe you can get the answer after reading the following passage about a newly-developed US computerprogram called Smarter Child.

If you ran into Smarter Child online, you would be surprised at this kid’s huge memory. It can remember many facts. For example, Smarter Childknows every baseball player in every team this season and the weather in every city across the US. He also knows every word in the dictionary. However, if you ask Smarter Child other private questions, you will get strange answers. A question about Smarter Child’s age returns, “I’ll be olderthan you after further study!”, and asking where he lives, you will get, “In a clean room in a high-tech building in California.”

Smarter Child uses the huge information on the World Wide Web as his memory bank. To answer questions about spelling, for example, SmarterChild goes to www.ahdictionary.com. For the weather, he visits www.intellicast.com. He turns to www.the-scientist.com for scientists andwww.moviefone.com for a fantastic movie.

Some scientists believe that by joining many systems of the Internet, an Artificial Intelligence (AI) with the combined (结合的) knowledge of,say, Albert Einstein, Richard Nixon and Britney Spears could be born. However, Smarter Child has difficulty in discerning whether a behavior is rightor wrong, which is obvious to any young child. If he wants to think and learn without any help from the programmers like boy-computer David in themovie Artificial Intelligence (AI), he must solve two problems.

The first is that computers find it difficult to read web pages because the files are sorted in different ways. That’s why programmers need to tell

Smarter Child where to look for the weather. It would be a much more difficult task to let him find it by himself. Another problem is that whileSmarter Child can deal with information more exactly and faster than any human, he needs programmers to make better systems that allow machinesto solve problems of common sense, which is a huge challenge.1. What may be unknown to Smarter Child?

A.His age.

C.A word in the dictionary.

2. Which website can Smarter Child visit to answer the spelling questions?

B.The weather in New York.

D.A player’s name of the Boston Redsox.B.www.intellicast.comD.www.ahdictionary.com

B.Copying.

C.Inventing.

D.Telling.

A.www.moviefone.comC.www.the-scientist.com

3. What does the underlined word “discerning” in paragraph 4 mean?

A.Preventing.

4. How is boy-computer David different from Smarter Child?

A.He has a huge memory.

C.He can make a weather forecast.

七、阅读理解

B.He can think and learn independently.D.He deals with information fast.

17. Babies have the charm to melt anybody’s heart instantly; no one escapes the twinkling eyes or the innocent smile. Just their presence willcheer you up, make you forget your worries and tempt you to indulge into their world. 1 Though I don’t have any answer to the question, Iwonder as to what makes their aura so desirable. And I think there is something we can learn from the young ones.

Forgive and Forget

Babies can laugh and giggle all day because they don’t keep hatred against anyone. 2 Do you think they’ve constructed an evil plan against you because you refused them candy last time? Probably not, life moved on and so did they.So why do we hold on to our past and refuse to let go of the emotional baggage? Does it do us any good except prevent us from laughing to thefullest?

3 Endless questions of young kids can sometimes be enough to drain the adult mind. They are always busy wondering how things work or whythings are the way they are, leaving no room for boredom. Their curiosity gives them an exponential learning curve; they pick up new things quicklyand do not refuse to change.

Unconditional Love

4 They don’t judge you before they come running into your knees and they don’t walk away if you don’t give them the same in return. They have no expectations from you and simply do what their heart desires. If you want a hug, they’ll give you a hug; if you want two, they’ll giveyou two. So how does the adult world become so materialistic that we decide what we give based on what we think we might receive?

Living life to the fullest is not a difficult task; you just need to have the right attitude and an open mind. 5 A.Keep smile every dayB.Never-ending Curiosity

C.What can we do to free from these worries?D.Why do we adore the young ones so much?

E.So don’t envy the peaceful life of a baby, start living it yourself!F.Kids have a hug and a kiss for anyone and everyone who wants one.

G.Their heart is pure and their mind empty to laugh out loud and enjoy the moment.
