I was told that the rain had brought about the short circuit, which caused the accident. 句中 “, which” 引出非限定定语从句，是解释I was told that后宾从中“ about”的介宾“ the short circuit”。这时逻辑工整。

如你改为“I was told that the rain had brought about the short circuit， so that it caused the accident.”容易让人误解。你本意应该是想用it代 “the rain had brought about the short circuit”这件事结果“导致事故”，但因为上句I was told 是主句/主要逻辑，特别是你是用了" 逗号“后（so that引导的结果状语从句一般要用逗号和主句隔开）, 效果上很容易使人感到前面整个句子是导致事故的原因，即 “I was told”这事导致事故。
显然此例中，“, which” 引出非限定定语从句是更科学的用法。另外，so that 结果状从，so的“结果逻辑”强，不要省。

不可以
bring是及物动词必须带宾语否则宾话从句不完整。追问bring about the short circuit，有宾语呀
